Hello Vicki, I have been looking for my first kumu. Her name was Rhoda Napoleon as well however around 1972 her and her husband (I believe his name was David) were living in Alameda, California at the time.

I would appreciate any response regarding her since she was a beautiful, kind woman and as my kumu she taught me a lot.

The Merry Monarch is indeed the Olympics of hula - have attended and watched more than once. My mom's dance troop actually performed in it too. Pretty beautiful and amazing stuff! In case you want to know about it, Mom often hosts kumu hulas for dance workshops as well as Hawaiian musicians for house concerts and I'll get you hooked up if you want. Mahalo!

Thank you for your kind words, Vicki. And very cool about your Hula connection. I don't know of Rhoda, but it sounds like she certainly planted a powerful seed for you.

In the lineage I have been trained in, we are blessed to have the backing of Uncle George Na'ope, founder of the Merrie Monarch Festival in Hilo, Hawai'i, on the Big Island, the foremost Hula competition which I am sure you know about.

We get lessons from his master student, and himself Master Kumu Hula, Etua Lopez, who teaches the keki, the young children, at the Hiolani Royal Palace to become Palace Hula performers.

He is a strict task master, and regularly performs miracles teaching us Haoles :) an entire Hula performance of an ancient chant in just 7 days! Of course our version of the motions and steps is less intricate and slower than the one his own dancers will perform for us at the beginning and end of the workshop.

They never get to perform for anyone until they they've been at it for years...

Aloha nui!

Having been taught hula in the traditional fashion (and having danced for 20 years), it is exciting to see such a great site about huna power and the true meaning of chanting and hula. My first kumu was Rhoda Napoleon, who lives on the big island, and I will never forget her. My mom is an avid teacher, chanter, ukester, and ambassador of Aloha. Thanks for your great site, Alex!
